Vastu Colours for Kitchen: Choosing Colours According to Direction
Asking which colour is lucky for a kitchen is the wrong question. The better one is which colour is appropriate, given the direction it faces and the nature of the space.
The kitchen is one of the most important functional spaces in a home. It is where food is prepared, nourishment begins and much of the family's daily routine comes together. From a Vastu perspective, the kitchen is also associated with the Fire element (Agni), and therefore its location, use, colours and overall environment deserve careful consideration.
Colour, however, should not be treated as an isolated Vastu remedy.
The direction of the kitchen, its layout, the placement of the cooking platform, water-related activities, ventilation, openings and the overall distribution of the five elements should be considered before deciding on a colour scheme.
So, rather than asking simply, "Which colour is lucky for my kitchen?" a better question is: "Which colour is appropriate for my kitchen, considering its direction and the nature of the space?"
Why Does Colour Matter in Vastu?
Vastu Shastra considers the built environment as an interaction of Panch Mahabhuta, the five elements: water, air, fire, earth and space.
A kitchen naturally has a strong association with Agni, because cooking involves heat and transformation.
Colours can be used as one of the many design considerations for creating visual and elemental harmony within a space.
However, colour should not be considered powerful enough to independently correct a fundamentally unsuitable kitchen location.
Vastu is a system of spatial relationships — not merely a colour chart.
First Consider the Direction of the Kitchen
Before selecting the colour, determine where the kitchen is located. In Vastu our concern is for the placement of the Chullah — the stove which creates the flame. Vastu does not consider the rest of the parts of a kitchen as important from a Vastu perspective.
The most suitable placements as per Vastu suggestions are in SE, SSE, S and W. Sometimes E can be considered, if this is the only option available. Moreover, we need to strongly avoid NNE and NE.
There are options available for the placement of the kitchen in almost every zone, but with appropriate remedy measures.
Should You Use Red in the Kitchen?
Red is strongly associated with Fire and can therefore be appropriate as an accent colour, particularly in fiery zones.
But there is an important difference between using red intelligently and making the entire kitchen red. For example, instead of red cabinets throughout the kitchen, consider:
- A cream, off-white or beige accent
- Red accessories
- Small decorative elements
- Warm-toned furnishings
This maintains the visual association with Fire without making the space excessively intense.
What About White?
White is one of the easiest colours to use in contemporary kitchens because it creates a feeling of cleanliness, openness and light. It should be used mainly for roofs rather than throughout the entire kitchen, and it can work particularly well when combined with:
- Cream
- Beige
- Light wood
- Warm metallic accents
However, Vastu should not be reduced to saying that white is always good everywhere. The direction and the complete spatial arrangement still matter.
What Colours Should Be Used Carefully?
I would avoid making absolute statements such as "black causes negativity". That is unnecessarily simplistic.
Instead, from a Vastu perspective, very dark colours generally should not be used — even cautiously, that is with Vastu remedies — in kitchens, particularly when they dominate a small, poorly ventilated or poorly lit space. Examples include:
- Black
- Very dark navy
- Charcoal
- Very dark brown
- Extremely deep purple
This is also a matter of interior design: dark surfaces can make a compact kitchen feel visually heavier.
The principle is simple: use colour to support the space — not to overpower it.
Kitchen Colour and Modern Interior Design
Vastu does not require a kitchen to look traditional. A modern modular kitchen can follow Vastu principles while remaining completely contemporary. For example:
Modern Southeast Kitchen
Warm beige + peach + light wood + subtle red accent
Modern East Kitchen
Off-white + light green + light brown + natural wood
This allows Vastu considerations to coexist with contemporary architecture and interior design.
What About the Kitchen Platform?
The platform is a major functional component of the kitchen and should not be selected purely according to colour. Consider:
- Direction of the kitchen
- Position of the cooking activity
- Sink and water placement
- Storage
- Ventilation
- Windows and openings
- Movement and usability
Colour and material should come after the Vastu-balanced spatial planning, not before it.
Can Colour Correct a Wrong Kitchen?
This is one of the most important questions. Not by itself.
If a kitchen is located in a direction that requires correction, changing the wall colour from blue to orange does not automatically resolve the underlying Vastu configuration. A Vastu assessment may need to consider:
Location→Zone→Entrance→Cooking position→Water→Drainage→Storage→Openings→Ventilation→Colour
Colour is one component, not the complete remedy. This is precisely why professional Vastu assessment is different from simply following an internet colour chart.
A VASTRO® Approach to Kitchen Vastu
At VASTRO®, we prefer to look at the kitchen as part of the complete spatial system of the property. We consider the relationship between:
- Direction
- Where is the kitchen located?
- Zone
- Which Vastu zone is involved?
- Fire
- Where is the cooking activity taking place?
- Water
- Where are the sink and water-related activities?
- Movement
- How do people enter and move through the kitchen?
- Colour
- Does the visual treatment complement the space?
- Overall Property
- How does the kitchen relate to the rest of the house?
This provides a much more meaningful assessment than selecting a colour in isolation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which colour is best for a Southeast kitchen?
Warm and balanced shades such as peach, light orange, terracotta and warm beige can generally be considered. Small red accents may also be used.
Is red compulsory for a Southeast kitchen?
No. Red is associated with Fire, but a kitchen does not need to be painted red to support the Fire element.
Can I use a white modular kitchen according to Vastu?
Yes. White can be used effectively, particularly when balanced with appropriate materials and colours according to the kitchen's direction and overall design.
Are dark colours completely prohibited in kitchens?
Not necessarily. However, very dark colours should generally be used with restraint, especially when they dominate a small or poorly lit kitchen.
Can changing the kitchen colour correct a Vastu defect?
Colour alone should not be considered a complete correction for a Vastu defect. The complete kitchen and property should be assessed.
What should I consider before selecting a Vastu kitchen colour?
At minimum: kitchen direction + zone + cooking position + water placement + layout + natural light + ventilation + overall colour balance.
Conclusion
Choose the colour after understanding the space.
A beautiful kitchen does not need to sacrifice Vastu principles, and a Vastu-conscious kitchen does not need to look old-fashioned. The most effective approach is to bring together:
Vastu principles→Practical planning→Modern architecture→Thoughtful interior design
The kitchen is an important part of everyday life. Rather than searching for a single "lucky colour", understand the space as a whole and choose colours that complement its direction, function and environment.
Vastu is not about fear. It is about understanding space.Acharya Narinder Vasudeva & Acharya Dhruv Vasudeva, VASTRO® Vastu Consultants & Astrologers
